Photo Album USS Prometheus Tour of China, Philippines, Hawaii, Samoa, Japan, Alaska and the Panama Canal ca 1915-1916
Album measures 7.25 x 11.25 x 2 inches with string-tied posts and pebbled black flexi-boards with "Places and Faces" in gilt on front. The string-tie literally expired as I was working on the album. We will carefully pack the album but a quick repair job for the new owner will help keep the integrity of the album. Photos are glued at corners and could be removed with little damage. Most are captioned on back AND in the album. Vast majority of the 288 photos are about 3.5 x 5.5 inches with a handful larger and smaller. Includes a small collection of RPPCs. A couple photos are missing and just a couple are loose. Overall, Very Good Condition.
As our good friend Kol Shaver would say, "this album is a tremendous exemplar documenting the cruises of the USS Prometheus circa 1915-1916." And it's hard to argue with that statement. The Prometheus was a repair ship recommissioned in 1914 and this album likely documents the naval career of a west coast resident/sailor in several tours including a 1915 tour of Asia and Alaska, plus a 1916 Atlantic tour including passage through the recently opened Panama Canal.
for an excellent run-down on the history of the USS Prometheus.
The album holds 288 photos. 22 photos document the raising of the submarine F-4 at Honolulu. Approximately 70 more document the people and naval bases of China, Japan and the Philippines. 90 photos document Alaska with an additional 20 images of the Panama Canal. 30 images are from the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco with the remaining being family images, including a collage page of about thirty small portrait views, not included in the 288 count.
A fascinating and well annotated album, 1915-1916.
We'll include many scanned examples; more upon request.
