Early California newspaper, the Daily California Chronicle began publishing November 21, 1853, and ceased May 12, 1858. Editor Frank Soule, in his column on page 2 proclaims, "The snorting of the first "iron horse" in California has been heard. The flame from his red nostrils has been seen. The dust, like a cloud has arisen along his course. Civilization has mounted her strongest steed here on this western Pacific slope, where but just now the war whoop preceded the steam whistle, and the squaw did the drudgery henceforth destined for the locomotive...and the era of railroad reality has commenced."
Another page two article headlines, "Latest as to the Siskiyou Indian War".
A smaller article announces the prospectus of a forthcoming book by Louis Agassiz, which likely was for " Contributions to the Natural History of the United States of America" published in 1857.
Full of great ads, public notices and political reporting. Item #1070
