Six items, including five signed by Nevada senator John P. Jones (1829-1912). Very good condition overall. Collection details below. John P. Jones was a politician who served as a Republican United States Senator from Nevada for 30 years. He made a fortune in silver mining, serving for a time as superintendent of the Crown Point silver mine in Gold Hill, Nevada, which was part of the Comstock Lode of silver ore. In 1874, Jones joined with fellow Nevada senator William M. Stewart, and bought controlling interest in the Panamint silver mines near Death Valley in Inyo County, California; that same year, he bought Colonel Robert S. Baker’s ranch, and in 1875, Jones and Baker, along with Baker’s Californio heiress wife Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker, founded the city of Santa Monica. Jones built the first railroad from Los Angeles to Santa Monica, the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad, which he sold to Southern Pacific in 1877.

ALS by John P. Jones to Henry M. Yerington, December 12, 1867, letter measures 8 x 10 inches; envelope measures 5.5 x 3.25 inches; 1 pp bifolio. Henry M. Yerington (1828-1910) was a Nevada businessman, Republican Party leader, and VP of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad; content of the letter discusses a joint purchase to be made, though I could not decipher what for. Comes with Wells Fargo 3 cent prepaid envelope. Lined paper letter in very good condition, no edge wear; light edge wear to envelope.

ALS by John P. Jones to Mr. Marquhart, re: delivering to Mr. Whiting 50 copies each of Jones’ speeches on silver and the double standard, August 7, 1876; letter measures 4.75 x 7.75 inches, 1 pp; on lined paper with House of Representatives letterhead; bottom right corner of letter missing, else fine; no edge wear; two ink fingerprints to back near missing corner; very good condition.

ALS by Senator Francis Marion Cockrell to Senator John P. Jones re: asking Jones’ advice about investing in the California King Gold Mines Company, June 21, 1901, 8 x 10.5 inches, 1 pp; lined paper with United States Senate letterhead; previously folded, else fine; no edge wear; very good condition. Francis Cockrell (1834-1915) was a senator from Missouri and a Confederate military commander in the Civil war.

John P. Jones cut autograph, purple ink on lined paper, also contains autographs of 3 other United States senators or representatives whom I could not identify. Previous owner pencil marks on back date the autographs as 1873-83.

Typed letter signed by John P. Jones to H.Z. Osborne, re: introduction of journalist David Lewsley, September 3, 1891, 8 x 10 inches, 1 pp; previous folds, no edge wear; very good condition. Henry Zenas Osborne (1848-1923) was a Los Angeles businessman who owned two newspapers, the Evening Republican and Evening Express.
