The Amphictyon Society was one of the earliest literary societies at Hillsdale College, which were formed by students to discuss, perform, and produce literature. The first literary society at the college, the Eunomian Society, was formed in the 1850s and was unique in admitting both men and women; however, after just a few years, the college’s administration ruled against admitting men and women into the same societies, so a proliferation of gendered societies sprang up instead. The Amphictyon Society was one of these, exclusively for men, though by 1890, women may have been allowed at least as guests again – some of the names on these ticket programs belong to women. Going by the programs on the backs of the tickets, the meetings of the Amphictyon Society looked quite fun – one meeting was devoted to Alaskan topics, and all included singing or piano performances. Very Good. Item #1202
