This is a clipping of the article about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, from the extra night report of the Missouri Democrat, Saturday, April 15, 1865. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton wrote the official government dispatch. At the time of this extra night report, President Lincoln was still alive, though he was “in a state of syncope, totally insensible, and breathing slowly; the blood oozed from the wound at the back of his head”, and he was “not expected to live through the night.” Also reported in this clipping is the attempted assassination of Secretary of State William Seward, who was recovering from a carriage accident at the time. Both he and his son were attacked and stabbed, and Stanton wrote that “it is hoped the wounds may not be mortal. My apprehension is that they will prove fatal.”
