This extensive collection contains thirty-nine manila envelopes and numerous loose photographs, correspondence, newspaper articles, and other items pertaining to Dr. Nolie Mumey’s research and writing of numerous articles and lectures and nearly one hundred books on western U.S. history, medical history, and poetry.

Manuscripts on western historical figures include John James Audubon; Sacagawea; Arapaho chief Friday; trapper and scout Richard “Beaver Dick” Leigh; Lola Montez, a dancer, actress, and courtesan; Joseph Addison Sewell, first president of the University of Colorado; painter John Dare Howland; Nathan Meeker, journalist and homesteader for whom the town of Meeker, Colorado is named; and more.

This archive also contains numerous manuscripts on western and medical history, such as Early Colorado Medicine; The Story of Quinine in the Treatment of Malaria: Doctor John Sappington And His Anti-Fever Pills; Tin Cup, Colorado; Women Physicians in Colorado; and Epitome of the Semi-Centennial History of Colorado’s Airmail.

In addition to the typed and handwritten manuscripts, there are numerous photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, plate proofs, photostats, booklets containing articles by Dr. Mumey, and other items pertaining to his research and writing. There are also two book proofs – a cloth binder titled Sacagawea, and The History of Flight: Illustrating the Evolution of the Airship and Aeroplane, an oversized screw-post bound catalog with typescript and pastedown engravings for plate proofs.

A one-of-a-kind collection from a singular contributor to western and Colorado historical literature. Nolie Mumey (1891-1984) was an American medical doctor, Army veteran, licensed pilot, and prolific author. From the Denver Public Library Archives: “One of his favorite anecdotes involved his inability to provide directions to Denver's downtown post office. This proved to be such an embarrassment, Mumey vowed to learn everything there was to know about Denver. In the process, he wrote nearly 100 books, many of which were devoted to Western history and medical topics” (Nolie Mumey Papers, Identifier: WH532).
