Portland, England: 1860, 1880. 1880 ALS by Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to Sir Cooper Ray, Prince Alfred, Portland, England, 1880, 4 7/8 x 7.75 inches, 4 pp.; and 1860 Engraving of Prince Alfred, Daniel John Pound, N.P., 1860, 8 7/8 x 13 inches, 1 pp.

Letter on H.M.S. Hercules letterhead; 4 pp bifolio, with writing on three pages; last page of the bifolio tipped onto a paper frame; previous fold line, no edge wear; fine condition. Engraving is heavily foxed, though the foxing is only noticeable in the lighter areas; left edge slightly chipped; good condition.

The letter is addressed to a Sir Cooper Rey, from Portland, 2nd July 1880. Written entirely in manuscript and signed by “Yours very truly, Alfred”, this letter references naval affairs – at the time of writing, the Prince was a rear-admiral in the English Royal Navy.

The portrait of Alfred, engraved by Daniel John Pound from a photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall, was done in 1860, when Alfred was 16.

Alfred Ernest Albert (1844-1900) was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; his older brother was Edward VII. Prince Alfred was the Duke of Edinburgh until 1866, when he succeeded his uncle Ernest II as the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire. He was an admiral in the Royal Navy, eventually ascending to Admiral of the Fleet; memoirist Percy Scott wrote that "as a Commander-in-Chief, the Duke of Edinburgh had, in my humble opinion, no equal. He handled a fleet magnificently." Very Good/Good. Item #1255
