The USS Salt Lake City was a Heavy Cruiser authorized in December 1924. Its keel was laid in June 1927 and launched January 23, 1929. The ship was commissioned December 11, 1929.
The ship ran patrols and exercises leading up to World War 2. The USS Salt Lake City was 230 miles west of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, arriving on scene December 8th. For service during World War 2, the USS Salt Lake City received 11 battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation for her actions during the Aleutian Campaign.
The ship was involved in atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll in 1946 and ultimately was sunk as a target hull in May 1948 off the southern California coast. Item #1273
