Archive of twelve letters including typed and written items including four typed letters from Carl Haverlin, three autograph letters signed from Rupert Hughes, three typed letters (one signed) from Lee Shippey and one typed letter signed from Alexander Davidson. One additional letter is unsigned. Good condition.
Interesting batch of letters mostly revolving around "The Writers" a spin-off from the Screen Writers' Guild and noted anti-communistic cabal of authors. Rupert Hughes served as President; Lee Shippey was Vice-president. Carl Haverlin was a member until he resigned due to "financial embarrassment" in 1933.
Rupert Hughes (1872-1956) was a novelist, director, screenwriter and composer. Within popular culture he may be best known as the uncle of Howard Hughes. Hughes authored no fewer than 21 books and wrote and/or directed at least 56 movies.
Carl Haverlin (1899-1985) was long-time President of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), getting his start in radio at KFI in southern California where he convinced management to provide live broadcasts of the Rose Bowl, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and concerts at Hollywood Bowl. Haverlin was also an active bibliophile.
Lee Shippey (1884-1969) was a published author but best known for his long-running columns for the Los Angeles Times and several San Diego newspapers.
Alexander Davidson was rookie dealer of rare Americana books based in New York City as of 1935.
