Two Cabinet Cards of Scenes from Evergreen, Colorado

Evergreen, CO: circa 1890. Two Cabinet Cards of Scenes from Evergreen, Colorado, circa 1890

A touch of foxing, penciled notation to bottom of one image, still both very good. Unknown photographer.

Evergreen is an unincorporated town, a post office and a census-designated place in Jefferson County, Colorado. The post office has been in operation since 1876. Situated over 7,000 feet high in the Rocky Mountains, 19 miles west of Denver, it was named for the evergreen trees surrounding the town. “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker graduated from Evergreen High School in 1988, and Willie Nelson had a 44-acre ranch there for several years. At the 2020 census, the population of Evergreen was 9,307.

These two great cabinet cards display scenes from the town from much older days; one has a date on its bottom edge which we think reads 1890, and shows six young men on a ranch, likely taking a break from work, judging by the chaps on one of them. He and another boy have fists up as if ready for battle (surely in jest), and all but one (the “competitor”) calmly face the camera. A sweeping backdrop of peaks and trees completes the scene. The other image is captioned on its verso, revealing a “Sunday in Evergreen” at someone’s (Post’s?) “old store.” The back of the photo reads "Post's old store". Amos Post was the first settler of Evergreen, Colorado and ran the store and post office. The building pictured has a sign for the post office (it naturally would have served double duty in a small town) and we see all number of townfolk going about their day. Children lounge on the eave out the second story window, men and women in hats and coats perch on their horse-drawn wagon, and residents of all ages are lined up on the porch.

Nostalgic, evocative and just plain fun images from tiny Evergreen, Colorado, many years ago. Item #1528
