The newspaper was first published in 1800 under the name “National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser” and was changed to just “National Intelligencer” in 1810. The “Daily National Intelligencer” began in 1813, was issued daily except Sundays, and was the dominant newspaper of Washington. It ceased publication in 1867 (Library of Congress). It generally included proceedings in the House and Senate and other government affairs, marriage and death notices, local and national advertisements for land, books, medicine, livestock, theater, parties, dry goods, timber, stage routes and steamship schedules along with advertisements for the return or selling of slaves.

There were many articles of note found in this set, and we are sure there are more to be found. One report of particular interest was that of a group of Mormonites heading west found in the May 31st issue. Originally printed in the Richmond Palladium it reads: “Richmond (Wayne Co., Indiana) May 24. Mormonites - On Monday morning last, a caravan of about two hundred Mormonites, with a long train of wagons, passed through this place, on their way to the ‘far west’. There were but a few women among them, and the men were generally, if not all, supplied with firearms…From their equipments, it has been suspected that they intend joining and defending their brethren in Jackson County, Missouri. They professed to be in search of new lands, whereupon to form a settlement, either in Illinois or farther west…” The mention of defending their brethren in Jackson County, Missouri is referring to the violent expulsion of Mormons from that area in 1833. This group of Mormons traveling through Indiana could have been part of Zion’s Camp (or Camp of Israel), a defense campaign organized by Joseph Smith to help the Mormons that were expelled from Missouri.

Includes a rare broadside titled "Extracts from Mr. Webster's speeches, in 1832",
on the passage of the bill for rechartering the Bank, and on the veto message" inserted between the March 24 and 25 issues. Only two copies of this broadside noted in OCLC as of May 2024.

Other nuggets found in this set include a report on “the richest gold mine in the world” found in Buckingham County, Virginia which raised about $2,000 worth of ore per day (March 3rd issue), advertisements for Davy Crockett’s autobiography “A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett, Written by Himself” published by E. L. Carey and A. Hart (February 8th issue and others), a graphic description of a tornado in Petersburg, Virginia (May 13th issue) and many articles about Texas and advertisements for land in Texas.

An impressive set of newspaper issues with an incredible amount of historical value. Fair condition. / None. Item #1543
