Front half of an envelope with writing on recto only. Envelope has been reinforced with archival paper along the edges on verso. Envelope has a vertical crease down the center and moderate soiling and creasing. Good condition.
Henry John Temple, the 3rd Viscount Palmerston, was British Secretary of War from 1809-28, Foreign Secretary 1830-34, 1835-41, and 1846-51, Prime Minister from 1855-58 and 1859-65 amongst other offices. The envelope was addressed from his home in Romsey.
Envelope reads: Romsey October Seventh [“Sixth” has been scribbled out] 1819(?)/ The Earl of Northesk Rosehill Winchester/ Palmerston. By signing the envelope, Palmerston shows he enjoys free frank privilege, a benefit enjoyed by members of Parliament, the Council, and persons acting in a public capacity (National Postal Museum). “Rumsey 79” is stamped in black ink. This is likely a mileage stamp, the number “79” not referring to the year. Good condition / None. Item #1609
