Silk-trimmed vellum certificate measures 16 1/8 x 12 inches. Silk ribbon faded and partially detached. Moderate soiling on recto, more so on verso. Some moisture damage. Verso has small label with notation "1085C". Previous folds. Fair Condition.

Certificate awarded to cadet Robert Bates--"We, the Commissioners, and Members of the Board, are of opinion that Gentleman Cadet Robert Bates is worthy of this honorable Distinction, and do grant him our Certificate accordingly."

Most likely, this certificate is from the Royal Military College established in 1802 first in Buckinghamshire, England, but moved in October 1812 to Sandhurst, Berkshire. The Royal Military College was a British Army military academy for training officers of the British and Indian Armies.

Signed by 13 Commissioners and Board Members of the College led by the First Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. Wellesley was a well-known military officer and statesman in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, serving twice as British prime minister. Item #1630
