Two Opaltype Portrait Photographs

Two portraits on milkglass. Each measure approximately 5.5 x 4.25 inches. Light soiling with tape remnants on back of one. Very good condition.

Photography on milkglass was a photographic process known as opaltype or opalotype. Opalotypes (also called milk glass positives) were printed on sheets of opaque, translucent white glass or milkglass. Early practitioners sometimes hand-tinted the photo to enhance their effect and a high quality opalotype is quite stunning. Never popular, the process had mostly disappeared by the 1930's.

These two images are typical opalotype portraits and likely were both mounted in a frame. I would guess they date to around 1900. Item #174
