Original Watercolor of Whisky Joe, E. L. Wertz, Gold Hill, 1949.

15 x 18.25 inches (includes margins).

Painting is double signed. The title and inscription are written in blue ink and the artist’s signature and date is painted in watercolor. Inscription is somewhat hard to read but possibly says “To my good friend Harvey (?) Aline (?), the best of whats left, Yours Truly E. L. Wertz”. The other signature reads: “E. L. Wertz, Gold Hill, 11-26-49.” Painting has small tears in the margins reinforced with archival tape on verso, light soiling and a few pin holes in the margins and minor creasing to the top right corner affecting the painting. Very good condition.

Little is known about the artist E. L Wertz, but watercolor portraits of western cowboys and outlaws seem to have been his specialty. Other examples of his work were found at auction but this portrait is the largest one we found. Very good condition / None. Item #1849
