Shakespeare Quote Handwritten by John Howard Payne

John Howard Payne Autograph Note

3 ⅝ x 6 ½ inch note, mounted onto slightly larger paper. Lightly age-toned and wrinkled. Very Good.

An unsigned note, handwritten in fountain pen by actor, poet and playwright John Howard Payne (1791-1852). Payne has penned a favorite quotation from Shakespeare’s “Henry VIII”, Scene II: “Oh, how wretched / Is that poor man who waits on princes’ favours - / There is betwixt that smile he would aspire to / That sweet aspect of princes, and their ruin / More pangs and fear than wars or women have - / And when he falls he falls like Lucifer / Never to hope again.” Provenance from JG Autographs of Peabody, Massachusetts.
