An autograph letter signed by Alfred Wigan (1818-1878) concerning performers in “Hush Money” at Windsor Castle to receive payment at the treasury for their services by Mr. Charles Kean, dated January 30, 1857. Alfred Wigan was an actor and theater manager. Along with Charles Kean, he took part in the first Royal Command Performance on December 28, 1848 at Windsor Castle by command of Queen Victoria. The play was “The Merchant of Venice.” At the time of the present letter, Wigan was actor-manager of the Olympic Theatre in London. He later managed the St. James Theatre, and when the Queens’ Theatre opened in 1867 he became its actor-manager and formed a new company which included Charles Wyndham, Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. Charles Kean (1811-1868) was the son of Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean, the lessee/manager of the Princess Theatre in London and was famous for his Shakespearean revivals. Item #1855
