Photographic Image and Clipped Signature of Thomas Carlyle

Chelsea [England]: 1871. Photographic Image and Clipped Signature of Thomas Carlyle, Chelsea [England], 1871

3.5 x 2.25-inch image and 2 x 4 inch dated clipped signature, both mounted to 10 x 8-inch seafoam green corkboard. Corner wear to mount, light spotting. Very Good.

A nice photographic image of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), prominent Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher. Includes a small note, signed in black ink, “Yrs truly / T. Carlyle / Chelsea, 7 March 1871”.

Carlyle is most famous for his influential historical works and Victorian-era writings, particularly his book "The French Revolution," considered a classic, as well as "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History."

Instances of Carlyle’s signature, even clipped, have fetched high prices at auctions in the past, and institutional holdings of any of his archival materials are scarce. Item #1866
