Small archive of three letters and two certificates of Captain James M. Ropes, 8th Regiment U.S. Cavalry. Four items measure 8 x 10 inches and one certificate measures 6 x 8.5 inches. Items have letter folds with light toning and soiling. Overall, very good condition.
This set includes three letters from the War Department to James M. Ropes. One informs him of his commission of Brevet Major, U. S. Volunteers and was sent to him at Elizabethport, New Jersey on October 22nd, 1866, and signed by the Assistant Adjunct General. The other two inform him that he has been appointed to rank of Second Lieutenant of the Eighth Regiment of Cavalry beginning on June 18th 1867: one of these letters is dated to July 2nd, 1867 and was sent to Benicia, California and states that he should report to his regiment at Prescott, Arizona Territory; the other is dated to August 7th 1867 but gives no indication of where it was sent or where he should report for duty. Both of these are signed by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton with a stamp signature.
Also included in this small archive is one Certificate of Membership to the Army Mutual Aid Association dated to March 14th, 1879, and a certificate of confirmation with the Episcopal Church of the Missionary District of Western Texas dated to 1885 and signed by Rev. R. W. B. Elliott.
Captain James M. Ropes served as first lieutenant and captain, Company F of the 2nd Regiment California Volunteer Cavalry, and also as first lieutenant and captain of the 8th Regiment U.S. Cavalry. He is credited for the “Ropes” pattern holster, an experimental pattern for the cavalry trooper which attempted to improve upon the Forsythe pattern. He died in 1897. Very good condition. / None.
