Legal document for lawsuit before the New York Supreme Court pitting James Jackson, represented by Martin Van Beuren (sic.) against John Stiles. Singed by Van Buren on verso. Suit dealt with the eviction of a tenant from house and land.
Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) was a founding member of the Democratic Party and served as the eight President of the United States from 1837 to 1841. Prior to his presidency, Van Buren served as New York's attorney general and U.S. senator, then briefly as the ninth governor of New York. He left the governorship to join Andrew Jackson's administration as the tenth United States secretary of state, then minister to Great Britain, and ultimately the eighth vice president from 1833 to 1837.
