Map in fine condition. Up until a few minutes ago this map apparently had never been unrolled. Acquired in a tightly rolled fashion with outer paper wrapper with tucked ends. Only flaw is very light wrinkling to top right edge, running about three inches. Will ship rolled.
Colorful and detailed pictorial map of the United States west of the Missouri River. The map features the Oregon Trail but also the other overland routes, including the Old Spanish Trail, Santa Fe Trail, Mormon Trail, Overland Stage, Pony Express and the routes of the Lewis & Clark and John C. Fremont. Historic locations and events are noted. Along the bottom edge we find a view of Fort Laramie, complete with riders, wagon train, and Indian encampment.
Irvin "Shorty" Shope (1900-1977) who was a painter and muralist who also illustrated numerous books and magazine covers. A Montana native, Shope was a working cowboy who took a correspondence course in art, intending to go east to study. Supposedly, Charles Russell recommended he stay west. Will James befriended Shope in the mid-20's and acquired commissions for Shope. The map is signed in print at the lower right including the family brand, the circle arrow. Item #1975
