Stellar example of partisan Civil War stationary from the border state of Kentucky. Bold red printed letterhead with the Kentucky seal in the middle and the slogan "Forever Loyal to the Union and the Constitution" in the banner.
Civil War stationary is highly collectible, colorful, patriotic and often crudely produced. This piece contains a two-page manuscript letter from a Gideon Sherman to his brother and sister.
"December 24th, 1861
My dear brother and sister, it is with pleasure that I set down to let you know that I am well and hope that these few lines will find you the same. The snow is 6 inches deep here and more looming and the weather is very cold. But I have nothing to write this time so goodbye to you this time. Don't write until I send you another letter for I don't know where I shall be for there is no John Sherman here for the winter is too cold to lay outdoors. So goodbye from Gideon Sherman to Charlie and (Loretta?) Keep to yourself, goodbye"
We find two civil war veterans named Gideon Sherman: one a sergeant from Minnesota and a private from Massachusetts. Neither quite seem to work given we think we know at least the name of one brother Charley. Primed for more research. Item #1980
