Collection in fair to good condition. One letter with archival tape holding split sheet. Most items are somewhat worn and soiled. Several include study sketches most likely in Cruikshank's hand. Face of one envelope is laid on thin card stock. Please examine scans carefully.
George Cruikshank (1792 – 1878) was a British caricaturist, political cartoonist and prolific book illustrator. His book illustrations for Charles Dickens include the titles Sketches by Boz, The Mudfog Papers, and Oliver Twist.
Stellar collection of original George Cruikshank manuscript letters, envelopes and ephemera. 4 of the items have doodles, study sketches and/or notes almost certainly in Cruikshank's hand. Dated items from 1865, 1866, 1872 and 1875.
Letters from Cruikshank appear to be addressed to Ch. Kent (October 6, 1866) and W. Richardson (July 17, 1875). The Kent letter reads, "Dear Friend, Will the enclosed do or will you wait until I return to town, so that we may both call upon Bertram Payne--at the same time--so that you may be introduced personally by yours truly, Geo Cruikshank"
To Richardson, "When I got to W. Fullers found that he had gone off to Manchester--he had sent one of his clerks up to my house to save us the trouble of going to his office today--and appointing 3 ock on Monday afternoon--for an interview with you & yours truly Geo Cruikshank"
An undated letter to Cruikshank is from a James Birch and the memo is from Samuel May, Costumer to the Principal London Theatres, on letterhead. Item #2078
