Original sheep binding with stamped leather label on spine. Both boards cracking; back board more so but holding. Moderate edge wear. Head and foot of spine worn. Pages somewhat toned. Edges soiled. All maps present plus the rare folding hand-colored map tipped in at back. Folding map in very good condition. One small tear at fold with very light edgewear and soiling. Previous owners name on front free endpaper. Includes tipped in "Explanations and References". Good condition.

Title of book pretty much sums up the contents of this mid-nineteenth century gazetteer. Includes a nice bird's eye view plate of New York City. The prize of this title is the inclusion of the very rare folding color map of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the West Indies Including Central America. None of the copies currently in commerce contains the map and we only found one copy in auction records which included the map.

Map shows mid-nineteenth century geography, cities, territories, and political borders in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. Includes "Table of Distances." Relief shown by hachures. No scale noted.

Despite the fact that the folding map was published by "Thayer, Bridgman & Fanning" in 1853, we find no reference that calls for the map to be included with the book. The book index does NOT call for it. Sabin 23786 simply calls for 'maps'. Not found in Phillips. Good. Item #2120
