Three volumes, each in period half sheep over marbled boards. Volume one has gilt stamped on spine but fading, the third volume retains spine label. Each volume has wear expected of volumes from 1827-1829 but remain almost fully intact. Several signatures are loosening but remain bound. One loose plate found. Leather is dry but not rotting. A couple of page tears observed. Edges and pages are generally toned with edge wear to many leaves. Interior pages are remarkably clean with toning and light foxing. Volumes 1 & 2 measure 8.5 x 10.5 inches; volume 3 measures 10.5 x 12.5 inches. Continuously paginated--issues for volume 4 bound at back of volume 3. 208, 208 and 240 pp.

Volume one contains two full plate copper engravings including Governor Simon Snyder of Pennsylvania (detached) and Meriwether Lewis bound opposite the Snyder plate and acid burned by the Snyder plate. Volumes 2 and 3 include quarto copperplate engravings in every third issue. One plate mostly missing from volume 3. Best known issues are two Davy Crockett stories, a James Fenimore Cooper story and the Meriwether Lewis issue, all present. Also contains poetry, book reviews, notices, obituaries and various notes.

Relatively scarce. Many digital holdings but few runs in academic libraries. A treasure trove of early 19th century literature. Item #213
