Account of 1834-1836 tour of the Mediterranean by Charles Rockwell. Rockwell's first posting was at Marseille as a missionary of the American Seamen's Friend Society in 1834. He then accepted the post of naval chaplain aboard the USS Potomac. According to the preface, Rockwell "had been granted [passage] by the Secretary of the Navy, and as there was no Chaplain on board, he yielded to inducements offered him to discharge the duties of the office during most of the succeeding cruise of two years and a half". He would publish his accounts in 1842.

After returning from sea, Rockwell was installed in March 1839, as pastor of the Congregational Church in Chatham, Massachusetts. Rockwell continued his pastorate through at least 1860 ending up at a church in Catskill, New York. In 1866 he published "The Catskill Mountains and the Regions Around" Item #2284
