Beautiful pure silk woven bookmark made by the Paterson (New Jersey) weaver Allen Chesters, still on the Chesters mount. Possibly used as a sales display). Stevengraphs (named after Thomas Steven of Coventry England who utilized the art of weaving colorful pictures from silk to great success) were popular in the late 1880's into the 1930's, most often designed as bookmarks but often framed for their beauty. Allen Chesters located his company in Paterson, New Jersey which hosted numerous silk mills and became known as America's Silk City. Many Chester items can command high prices.
