From George William Anderson's "Voyages of Captain Cook" published in 1784. 8 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches, mounted on card stock. Light soiling. Verso blank but shows removal of tape along edges. Good condition.

Striking oval portrait of Captain James King (1750-1784). King was the astronomer recommended by Dr Thomas Homsby to accompany Cook's third voyage. He was appointed to the Resolution as second lieutenant and reportedly was ashore taking sights at the time of Cook's death in Hawaii in 1779. Following Cook's death, he helped lead the ships on the remainder of the voyage, also completing Cook's account of the voyage prior to his early death from tuberculosis. Item #2353
