Spiral bound commercially produced leather padded photo album with original hand-painted scene of soldier driving a green jeep on front cover. Edge wear to boards. Black photo pages within. Photos all mounted with photo corners. Several missing from mounts but there are also 19 loose photos--more than the number missing within album. Most of the photos are annotated on back. Good condition.
Collection of 118 snapshots, mostly 4 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches or 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Many include censor stamp on verso "Passed by Army Base Examiner".
Stellar collection of World War Two era photos from Alaska, likely compiled by Sgt. Howard T. Sollenberger of Claysburg, Pennsylvania. Includes views from Anchorage and Seward but also many images from Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, and from the Aleutian Island of Attu. Images include soldiers posing for the camera but also many men on firing ranges and on patrol, plus many landscape photos of the bleak and harsh terrain.
The Battle of Attu, in 1943 was the only World War II land battle fought in what is now part of a United States. At least one of the photos in album is dated 1945 but we have not removed all of them to examine annotations. A pretty great World War Two photo album! See scans. Item #2373
