Pilot, The--Six Civil War Era Newspapers

Boston, Massachusetts: Patrick Donahoe, 1861. Pilot, The--Six Civil War Era Newspapers out of Boston, Massachusetts

Collection of six newspapers from 1861. All are untrimmed and open fully to 45 1/2 x 34 inches. Typical condition for 1860's newsprint with chips and tears to edges and splitting at folds with minor loss of content. 8 pp. Good condition.

Collection of six Civil War era Boston newspapers with two January issues prior to the start of the conflict. Published by Irishman Patrick Donahoe, The Pilot catered to the many Irish immigrants settling in the greater Boston area and acquired a reputation of being an Irish-American cultural newspaper.

The January 5, 1861 issue includes President Buchanan's proclamation, "The Union of the States, is at the present moment threatened with immediate and alarming nature" and calls for a day of "fasting, humiliation and prayer" Friday January 4th.

The January 12th issue contains a series of dispatches on page 5 titled "The Union---Secession, &c."

With the start of the war in April 1861, all subsequent issues give the war front page ink with details of battles, skirmishes, further war preparation and dispatches from soldiers at the front lines. Many of the articles are written with references to Irish-American contributions to the Northern war effort.
