London: Wm. Hart, H. C. Richter and Joseph Wolf, 1862-1873. Print from "The Birds of Great Britain", Numenius Phaeopus, Whimbrel

Original plate from John Gould's masterpiece "The Birds of Great Britain. Plate measures 15 1/4 x 22 inches. Stab holes along bottom edge. Light corner bends and soiling. Several small rusty marks in sky to left of Whimbrel's head. Fine hand-coloring enhanced with gum arabic. Good condition.

Published between 1862 and 1873, "The Birds of Great Britain" was published by Wm. Hart, H. C. Richter and Joseph Wolf from drawings by Hart, Richter, Gould and Wolf, but John Gould executed the majority of the plates. The work is recognized as one of the finest and most comprehensive record of native birds at that time and rivaled John James Audubon's "Birds of North America."

Includes the two-page description which accompanied the plate in "The Birds of Great Britain". The Whimbrel shown was collected May 11th, 1870 in Pagham Harbour, Sussex where it is a regular summer visitor. The birds are about life sized. Item #2378
