The Chase, or The Third Day

San Francisco, California: Two Fine Chaps, 2008. The Chase, or The Third Day, Herman Melville, Two Fine Chaps, San Francisco, California, 2008. 1 folded sheet ([12] pages): illustrations; 15 x 10 cm (folded).

Fine press artist book printed on one sheet, folded into 6 leaves and 12 panels. Perhaps the slightest fading on spine. Each of the die-cuts has very slight 'burn marks' at edges. Very good condition.

"'The Chase' is an excerpt from the final chapter of Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick'. The accompanying illustration, or 'The Third Day', is the handiwork of Tom Biby and Jonathan Fetter-Vorm. The text is set in Mayflower type & was bound by Taurus Bookbindery in an edition of 180. Copies bearing the numbers 1-25 are designated as deluxe, while the numbers 26-75 are signed by yours truly, the Two Fine Chaps"--Colophon. This copy, signed by both Biby and Fetter-Vorm is number 43.

Publication unfolds to reveal both Melville's text (finely printed) [verso] as well as a twenty-inch long pen & ink illustration [verso]. Each page of the text features a small cut-out window that reveals the other side of the folded panel. Spine flap actually folds into itself leaving the impression of a book which has six pages with die-cuts. Upon opening the spine, the book reveals the panoramic pen & ink sketch. Very clever and unique.
