As the subtitle states, this is a periodical published for the farm, the garden and the fireside, devoted to improvement in rural affairs, to elevation in mental, moral, and social character, and to a record of science, progress, and the times. Each issue contains segments on agriculture, breeding, horticulture, flower and kitchen gardens, dairy, entomology, beekeeping, health and disease, and vegetable physiology.
Issues include the "Fireside Department" which includes poetry, photography, fiction, and scientific articles, plus a "Record of the Times" with dispatches from newspapers worldwide and domestically. Finally, each issue concludes with several pages of advertisements including some nifty woodblock ads.
With the advent of the American Civil War in April 1861, The Country Gentleman published in their April 18, 1861, issue, Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation to call forth a militia of 75,000 men and call for "all loyal citizens to favor, facilitate and aid this effort to maintain the honor, the integrity, and the existence of our National Union, and to redress wrongs already long enough endured." Each subsequent issue devotes a good portion of "Record of the Times" to the Civil War.
The ads alone are fun to scan, especially for anyone who farms, gardens or has an interest in agriculture. Item #2565
