Hundreds of 1960's Street Photographs of Mexico and Guatemala Including 8 x 10 Prints, Proof Sheets and Negatives
Collection includes (131) 8 x 10 inch black & white prints, and (352) 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inch black & white proofs (on proof sheets) with negatives. All in sleeves. Several of the proofs have editor markings. Handful of images are vastly over or under exposed but for the most part, the lighting and exposure levels are very good. The negatives we examined all are in very good condition; they came to us stored in glassine sleeves. A small number of duplicates noted. Overall, collection in very good condition.
A very curious and enlightening collection likely dating from the 1960's featuring mostly street photography from Mexico and Guatemala. The collection does not have the look of 'tourist' photography and there are few if any 'posed' photographs. Rather, the collection has all the hallmarks of a professional or very good amateur photographer practicing 'street photography'. One definition of street photography, or candid photography is: "photography conducted for art that captures unplanned chance encounters and random occasions within public places."
While there are some 'typical' cultural views, the street scenes take you back to a place and time of normal folks going about their lives, with lively clothing and expressionless faces. People hard at work or going about their daily lives.
Some of the best images are market scenes and views with timeless advertising signs visible--Coca-Cola, Pemex, or painted signs on the sides of buildings. One photo documents a little bit of graffiti about an American icon, "viva Elvis'. Another great image shows a little boy peeking out between the legs of a weaver working a small waist loom. Collection also includes a beautiful shot of a young girl vendor handing fruit to a passenger in a bus--a classic image full of detail.
A second smaller theme of the collection are distant views of barren vistas, seaside photos, volcanoes and various Mexican landscapes.
We also have maybe 20 images featuring the same Landcruiser in differing locations with one timeless image of three men surrounding the open hood of the vehicle. Some things never change.
We do not know locales nor who the photographer(s) are, which from a scholastic perspective is sad, but from an esthetic perspective might even add to the allure. Certainly, a collection worthy of study with many views equal to any published street photos from this place and time.
Our scans may have some reflective light on images as photos were in protective sleeves. Item #2573
