Cowboy Songs and Hillbilly Ballads Broadside

San Francisco, California/New York City: Sherman Clay Music Company/Engel Van Wiseman, circa 1930's. Cowboy Songs and Hillbilly Ballads Broadside, Sherman Clay Music Company/Engel Van Wiseman, San Francisco, California/New York City, circa 1930's.

Broadside measures 24 x 18 inches. Printed on recto and verso in green ink. Previous folds with moderate to heavy chipping at folds and edges. Middle vertical fold is separated and chipped 4 inches from top. Printed on acid heavy and fragile newsprint. Manuscript pencil writing near title. Great candidate for conservation. Fair condition.

Striking musical broadside likely from the 1930's--we've been unable to find another copy recorded. Includes lyrics from 55 tunes ranging from the popular and well-known to obscure tunes. Text at top of broadside advises customers to purchase sheet music for these tunes at their local music store, or mail order sheet music for .35 in stamps from Sherman Clay Music Company or Engel Van Wiseman in San Francisco, California and New York City.

Graphics include "Buffalo Bill" Burkhardt and the Iroquois Indian Chief Big Tree. Francis Eden Burkhardt was a colorful Hollywood California entertainer and Buffalo Bill impersonator; Chief John Big Tree was a Seneca actor who appeared in almost films between 1915 and 1950. Big Tree claimed his likeness was one of three used in designing the Buffalo Head Nickle.

A few of the obscure tunes which caught this cataloger's eye include "The Tattooed Lady", "Pretty Quadroon", "Dust Off That Old Piana", "Chili and Beans", and "I've Got No Use For the Women".

Well known tunes include "Home on the Range", "Tumbling Tumble Weeds", "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane" and "Whoopee Ti-Yi-Yo Git Along Little Dogie".

An obscure, if not rare item of musical Americana.
