Entirety of the issue comprises "Lecture on mines and mining, delivered by Adolph Sutro." concerning the Sutro tunnel. Includes numerous sketches and maps of the Sutro Tunnel; a total of 36 figures.

4 page Daily Independent Supplement, consisting of illustrations and a lecture delivered by Adolph Sutro on Mins and Mining at Piper Opera House in Virginia City.

Sutro argues the benefits of the Sutro Tunnel, and rails against the Bank of California and the Central Pacific Railroad and their influence on the Comstock Lode. The Sutro Tunnel was the largest drainage tunnel in the west. Construction began in 1869 and was mostly completed by 1878 whereupon Sutro sold his interest.

This "Supplement" has all the trappings of a paid propaganda piece as Sutro sought to maintain political favor and move forward with construction.

Not very common--we find three copies in institutions (Gene Autry Museum, Michigan and Reno) and several in commerce as of April 2026. Item #2587
