Original string-bound printed wrappers (staples likely added later) with signed authorial inscription at top. Booklet appears to have been trimmed on the fore edge. Ex-libris U.S.G.S. Menlo Park office. Back wrapper almost detached. Light toning. Interior very clean. Good condition.

Address by famed geologists and geomorphologist Grove Karl Gilbert to the American Association for Advancement of Science held in New York City, August 10, 1887. Among other topics, Grove advocates for the standardization of color nomenclature used in geologic mapping worldwide. The United States Geological Survey adopted a scheme in 1881 while European scientists used a separate style. The unification concept was endorsed by the International Congress of Geologists.

Grove Karl Gilbert was a respected and prolific geologists involved in the western surveys of the 1870s. He spent nine years with the Wheeler and Powell Surveys, from 1871 to 1879. He held many professional positions and was elected twice as President of the Geological Society of America. Item #2634
