19th Century. [POISONS][ANTIDOTES] Poisons and their Remedies--19th Century Autograph List of Poisons and Remedies

3-page bifolium measuring 4.75 x 7.25 inches.
Title handwritten on back page. Vertical fold-line down the middle; chipped lower right corner; some foxing and toning and separation. Fair condition.

Manuscript document, possibly by a medical student, listing a variety of poisons followed by their remedy. Listed poisons include acids, alkalis, alcohol, arsenic, lead, corrosive
sublimate, kreosote [sic], night henbane, mushrooms or toadstools, lunar caustic or nitrate of silver, opium or laudanum, oxalic acid, prussic acid, dog bites, snakebite, bee stings, spider bites, muskito [sic] bites & c, tobacco,
verdigris, and white vitriol.

Final paragraph gives the following summation: " “In almost all cases of poisoning emetics [vomiting] are highly useful, and of these one of the very best because most prompt and ready is the common mustard flour or powder – a tea spoonful of which stirred up in warm water may be given every five or ten minutes until free vomiting can be obtained. Emetics and warm demulcent drinks such as milk and water, flax seed or slippery elm tea, chalk water should be given without delay.”

Folk medicine seemingly prevails in this short thesis. An example is the remedy for bites of all kinds--dogs, mosquitos, spiders etc. "Strong hartshorn [distillation of deer antler] applied and taken internally, also give sweet oil and stimulants freely, apply a ligature above the part bitten and apply cupping glass."
