1911-1913. Photograph Album Showing a Woman’s Trips to Germany, Niagara Falls, Virginia and Monroe, New York, with a Historical Bent, 1911-1913

5¾” x 8” flexible fabric album with 83 photographs adhesive mounted to construction paper leaves. Most photos around 3½” x 2½”, 6 are larger, and nearly every page is captioned in a fine hand. Very good condition overall. Covers are lightly scuffed and worn, one leaf is loose, and around 24 images appear to be lacking, including a few excised. A few photos faded, a few scattered small stains. The last 7 leaves are blank.

This album was compiled by Lillian V. Polak of New York. She and her husband Edwin were co-directors of a brokerage company, along with William Ehrenhaus, a German immigrant. This album features 9 shots on board the “Cleveland” in 1911 (mostly women on the ship) and 22 throughout Germany. The images are captioned in both English and German, and we begin to see Lillian’s interest in history; she noted the “Ruins of the Castle of Konigstein - Blown up by the French 1796”. One shot shows Lillian with another woman in the gardens at Chemnitz, and there are portraits of “Papa and Mama Ehrenhauss.” Several pages (37 images) reveal a “V.F.H.C. v. 1858” trip to Monroe, New York. One larger photo is a group shot of about 32 people, holding pennants with the numbers 58 on them. We were unable to discern what this group was about, but it seems likely that it was a historical society of some sort. The images mainly depict the natural scenery of the area, historic buildings and group members proudly displaying their pennants. Another ten images reveal a trip to Niagara Falls, including shots of the Buffalo Historical Society. There are also photos Lillian took on a trip to Virginia, revealing the Hotel Chamberlain, Old Point Comfort, the Parade Grounds at Fort Monroe, and a shot of their tour guide in the Capitol. A lovely album with a historical lean. Item #432
