Kompositions-Skizzen (Composition Sketches) of German Artist Richard Graef Circa 1918

Homemade string-bound folio measuring 9 x 12 inches with 20 pages plus wrappers. Wrapper has title and initials in brown, green and orange. One loose leaf plus several loose sketches. Contains 44 original study sketches of various mediums including pencil, colored pencil, ink, and watercolor. If the year noted on several of the pieces is any indication, Graef was nearly 40 years old when he completed some of these. I would have thought much, much younger.

Richard Graef (1879-1945) was a German painter, graphic artist, draftsman and illustrator born in 1879 Oberweißenbach near Selb. He was a student of H. v. Hayeck in Dachau and received further education in Paris. Graef worked for the Munich magazine "Simplicissimus", initially in Crossen an der Oder based in Dachau from 1934. He was a member of the Association of German Graphic Artists and the Reich Association of Fine Artists in Germany. (askART).

9 pieces appear to be bookplates sketches. There are also a handful of commercial sketches plus sketches with commentary. Also includes 8 'modern' color sketches. See photos.

Altogether a unique assemblage of study sketches from a minor German artist of the first half of the 20th century. Item #448
