Typed carbon manuscript with annotations in purple pen-- a favorite ink color of Zane Grey. Blue Feather was published in 1961 as "Blue Feather and Other Stories."
From a Bonhams and Butterfield description of the typed manuscript of Blue Feather--"Taking a cue from Romeo and Juliet, Grey here narrates the tale of a fierce tribal battle complicated by a love affair between a warrior on one side and the daughter of the chief on the other. Unlike Shakespeare, however, Grey avoids the truly tragic ending for Blue Feather and Nashta, going instead for something a little more lurid: as both Blue Feather and Nashta wait to be sacrificed, his father orders: "'Strip the maiden!' he commanded. 'Let Nothis Toh see that which lost him a son!' / The warriors stared above dilating nostrils. These grim-lipped Nopahs, used to the hard fare of the trail, abstinent in all ways of the flesh, indifferent to their squaws, quivered under the birth of a worship to beauty. They saw a slim form, white as driven-snow, fragile, like the flower that leaned from the wall of the precipice...." Fortunately, Blue Feather breaks loose from his restraints, covers Nashta's nakedness, and the two are forgiven and spared by Nothis Toh." Item #993
